Questions
Where do we meet the morning of the trip?
We meet in the "Paddlecraft Staging Area" of the Hoover Dam Lodge, just off Hwy 93. Follow the
signs to the Hoover Dam and it's on your left. In Boulder City, Hwy 93 turns into a non-separated
road, so there is no exit ramp off the freeway. Just turn left into the 1st entrance and park in the
back which is designated paddlecraft parking.
What time will we get back?
We return to the Hoover Dam Lodge lot between 4:30-5:30 pm, depending on traffic.
What is included during the trip?
Rentals include your paddlecraft, life vest, paddle, bowline, and topo map. Shuttle service is also included
FREE of charge with every rental.
Do you offer any discounts?
Yes! We offer discounts to Las Vegas Meetup Group members, who receive $5 off any rental. Scout troops
and Church/Youth Groups
are also eligible for discounted rates of $5 per person. Please inquire at time of reservation.
Is there a minimum age requirement?
When you are renting gear, you are responsible for yourself. This is your decision and you should make it based upon your
skill level and preparedness, as well as you ability to handle emergencies. Shelter from the elements is sometimes unavailable,
and the desert is harsh. Consider this before bringing young children. That being said, many folks have a great time in Black Canyon with the
entire family. Just use common sense.
Are there rapids or whitewater?
Not usually. The river is classified as moving flatwater, however there are strong currents, eddies, boils, and strainers. Self rescue
skills are highly recommended. Knowing what to do in the event of a capsize can make or break your trip.
What should I bring/wear?
Take a look at our packing list section, for a
complete outline of items to bring on your trip. If you have questions, don't hesitate to call our office. We will be happy
to answer any questions you have about clothing, hiking boots, sleeping bag ratings, etc.
When should I make a reservation?
Permits are limited and sell out quickly - even as early as 6 months in advance. Large groups should call as early as possible. Check
availability before making big plans and you'll save yourself alot of frustration.
What if I am late to the take-out?
We have an obligation to return other guests to their hotels and vehicles in a timely fashion. If you arrive more than 15 minutes late,
we will most likely return to Las Vegas with those paddlers who arrived on time, then make a second trip to Willow Beach to
retrieve you and our gear. You will be charged a late fee of $75 per person. You may also have to wait several hours while we
drive across the Hoover Dam and deliver guests to hotels on the Strip before we can return to Willow Beach to pick you up. It is
an inconvenience for everyone involved. Please be on time.
What if it's too windy and I'm tired?
Self-guided paddlers are responsible for getting their group to the take-out point on time. When going without a guide, you are
acknowledging that you are experienced in the outdoors and have adequate paddling and self-rescue skills.
Desert Adventures cannot be held responsible for weather conditions, wind, rain, heat, or other elements of nature.
Keep in mind, you are choosing to venture into a primitive area with no cell phone reception. You should be prepared
to deal with emergencies on your own. There is NO RESCUE SERVICE for tired or weary paddlers. You are responsible for yourself.
If this make you nervous in any way, we suggest looking at our Guided Trips.
Should I buy travel insurance?
If you are concerned about the possibility of having to cancel, we strongly suggest you purchase trip cancellation
insurance to protect your vacation investment. Our cancellation policy will apply in every instance, with no
exceptions for any reason. Desert Adventures is not responsible for any expenses incurred due to travel delays,
flight cancellations, or illness. Desert Adventures assumes no financial responsibility for personal injury,
emergency evacuation, or equipment lost or damaged in any way.
What if I have to cancel?
We have a 14 day cancellation policy. Cancellations made 2 weeks prior to departure date will receive a full refund.
Cancellations made within those dates will be issued a percentage of their refund, with absolutely no refunds or
rescheduling within 48 hours. If you must reschedule, we require 48 hours notice and rescheduling fees
will apply. Desert Adventures will not issue any refund for leaving a trip early.
Trips run rain or shine. Desert Adventures reserves the right to cancel trips due to weather or unsafe
conditions. In this case, we will reschedule, issue a credit, or refund money, depending on individual
circumstances. For more information see our Payment & Cancellation Policies
section, or call our offices.
